Greater Western Sydney Giants midfielder Callan Ward has suffered a gruesome finger injury during Sunday’s loss to the West Coast Eagles in Perth.
Late in the third quarter of the round 13 fixture, Ward collided with rival Nic Reid while diving to retrieve the footy near the boundary.
After landing awkwardly on his side, the 30-year-old immediately got back to his feet and ran off the field, holding his left hand.

It was later revealed Ward had suffered a compound fracture in his middle finger, which was bent in two directions with exposed bone.

Fremantle Dockers great Matthew Pavlich revealed the news to the Fox Footy commentary team.
“It did not look good at all,” Pavlich conceded.
“The finger was bent in all sort of directions, it didn’t look pretty.
“Callum Ward is done for the game … the staff of the Giants are on the phone right now to find a surgeon tonight here in Perth.
“Terrible news for Callum Ward and the Giants.”
Hawthorn legend Dermott Brereton praised Ward for his calm reaction to the horrific injury.
“I had a compound fracture once, and it was one of the most queasy things I’ve ever looked at,” Brereton said.
“Callan Ward, he looked at as though he had turned over the wrong card while playing gin rummy.”

Hamilton Spectator sports editor Adam Hill tweeted: “Yikes, Cal Ward pops his finger, can see bone and he barely flinches. They don’t call him cementhead for no reason.”
Ward has played 163 games for the Giants since signing for the club in 2012.
West Coast recorded their eighth consecutive AFL victory after toppling the Giants 9.7 (61) to 7.7 (49), and remain in the top four spots on the ladder.
The Giants rued missed opportunities in front of goal, particularly considering the visitors led the inside 50s tally 41-36.
West Coast half forward Jack Darling scored a game-high three majors, while defender Jeremy McGovern provided plenty of highlights, ending the contest with 18 disposals and 10 marks.
“I think the Giants really took it on. In the last quarter they swung the ball around a lot more which was harder to defend and they got pretty close,” Darling told ABC Grandstand.
“I’m pretty tired. The result is a bit of relief and to get a good block in of home games was good. Happy that we did enough to hold the lead tonight.
“Looking forward to the warmer weather. I think the system we are playing now will help us in Queensland too. We’re still working with the AFL to get a chartered flight, but there is some family coming and my family will come later in the week.”
Next weekend, the Giants will take on the Fremantle Dockers in Perth, while the Eagles will travel to Queensland to face the Richmond Tigers.Best mark of 2020?
