AFL goes wild for 211cm giant’s rare feat

After snaring their ninth win of the 2020 season, the Magpies have officially secured a spot in the finals.

Jordan De Goey scored four goals on his return from injury, but everyone was talking about Cox’s stellar feat in the fourth quarter.

Collingwood were ahead by just three points when midfielder Callum Brown booted the footy towards Cox near the 50m line.

The 29-year-old claimed the contested mark, but instead of preparing for the free kick, Cox caught everyone off guard by sprinting towards the posts.

The American giant then pulled off a rare running bounce before punting the Sherrin through the centre posts for his second major of the day.

On Fox Footy, Former Hawthorn captain Jason Dunstall cried: “That is pure highlight reel stuff.

“Have a look at the expression on his face. He’s up and about.

“He’s contested, he’s competed, he’s taken marks, he’s had a bounce, turned, kicked it on the run — and that is just what the doctor ordered for the Pies.”

Hawthorn great Jordan Lewis replied: “Everything he’s touching, every contest that he’s going to, he’s having a real influence.

“That might be his first bounce in AFL football!”

In actuality, as revealed by Fox Sports reporter Tom Morris, Cox has only bounced four times before in the AFL, the most recent attempt occurring in Round 14 last year.

Racing presenter Nick Quinn tweeted: “2018 preliminary final Mason Cox is back. Richmond supporters are still convinced that night was just a bad dream.”

Herald Sun journalist Sam Landsberger posted: “Mason Cox absolutely taking the piss. Yep, it’s September.”

The Advocate reporter Alex Fair tweeted: “Tonight has been a very nice reminder of how much fun Mason Cox is to watch when he’s at his very best. The confidence to take that bounce though was something else entirely.”
